A recent article looked at the impact of DHA/EPA (the Omega-3’s from fish oil) on the morphology of insects. There is currently aggressive, genetic modifications being done to plants to make them produce fish oil. Even though Nature would not have done this for probably a good reason (why ask such a basic question), man is going headlong into this endeavor. So now that we are at this precipice, what will it do to the environment?
Well, interestingly, these insect studies show gross deformities when fed a diet of fish oil. Is this a warning sign of what’s to come? Why are we fundamentally changing the biology of our crops genetically for no additional benefits and what could be an environmental disaster. It has happened before. A GMO grass was being studied and is now growing wild and nothing kills it.
So there are 2 cautionary points to be taken away here. Why are we altering genetics of plants to produce a product of dubious health benefits to man and what is the effect of the genetic modification on the environment around us? Once this gene gets into the wild, there is no predicting its effects, could it eradicate all of these natural predators and forever change the earth that we live on?
