A new study published online December 7 in the journal Scientific Reports by researchers at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University (LKSOM) associates the consumption of canola oil in the diet with worsened memory, worsened learning ability and weight gain in mice which model Alzheimer's disease (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-017-17373-3). The study is the first to suggest that canola oil is more harmful than healthful for the brain. In a mouse experiment, the consumption of Canola Oil caused a shocking degree of brain impairment. These particular mice are used in experiments with Alzheimer's Disease.
It is something I’ve been talking about with my patients for the last 5 years. Interestingly, this is the first study to look at this highly processed, genetically modified oil. It also agrees with what would be the predicted effect knowing the biochemistry of this oil.
What other oils are dangerous? Well based on biochemistry, it would be predicted that corn oil, soy oil, cottonseed oil, the generic “vegetable oil” and margarine would probably show a similar result, mainly do to the way they are processed. Read labels carefully, ask restaurants what they cook with and watch out for fast food. The good cooking oils are organic and naturally saturated, that is coconut oil, olive oil, butter or ghee (organic please).
The more highly unsaturated vegetable oils (such as the ones in Pure Form Omega) need to be consumed in their raw form and not to be cooked with. Cooking denatures unsaturated fats and can cause the formation of dangerous aldehydes and adulterates the fats so they would impair cell membrane function. Alzheimer’s is a cell membrane problem.
Treat your brain properly, avoid dangerous fats, consume good fats in their raw form and cook with stable saturated fats.
