Well, it’s finally happened. A full 50% of Canadians will get cancer at some point in their lifetime.* This is truly an astounding effort considering that only 117 years ago cancer death rate was only 6.2/100,000 and now it is 200/100,000.* That’s an incredible 3,225% increase! It’s not because we are living longer (only by about 6 years and that is mostly due to better sanitation). It’s not genetic (that is statistically impossible). So it has to be environmental or in other words, what we eat!

The American Heart Association New and Dangerous Dietary Recommendations

The recent Presidential Advisory on Dietary Fats and Cardiovascular Disease is fraught with conflicts from the food industry. The recommendations in it are dangerous and contradict known biochemistry. The promotion of soy, corn and canola oil is directly against my recommendations for health.

Here is a little known fact. What do you think the heart prefers for energy? Well its fats! Not sugar or carbohydrates. At least 65% of the energy your heart uses must be derived from fats. If good quality fats are not available, such as in today’s Standard American Diet (SAD diet), you will end up with issues that compromise your heart function such as Congestive Heart Failure (CHF). Someone with CHF is 50% likely to be dead within 5 years. That is as bad as most cancers. There are 6 million Americans with CHF and 550,000 more diagnosed every year. Almost all of it is preventable.

Interesting Effect of Fishy Omega-3 on Insects

A recent article looked at the impact of DHA/EPA (the Omega-3’s from fish oil) on the morphology of insects. There is currently aggressive, genetic modifications being done to plants to make them produce fish oil. Even though Nature would not have done this for probably a good reason (why ask such a basic question), man is going headlong into this endeavor. So now that we are at this precipice, what will it do to the environment?

New Guidelines for Prevention of Post-Operative Surgical Site Infections

The CDC has released its recommendations for prevention of post-operative, surgical site infections. What’s interesting is what is missing. Probably the most important aspect of healing is the improving the patient’s health before and after surgery. Although a comprehensive nutritional program is ideal for surgical patients, it is probably not practical especially in the case of emergency surgery.
